Arts Integration: A Toast to Teacher Renewal

Relieved...Refreshed...Thankful...Excited.. Hopeful...Ready...Hopeful...Inspired...Renewed...Relaxed...Exuberant... I teach teachers! Of course, I wear many other hats pertaining to the education and performing arena, but teaching teachers and other educators is one of the most important things that I do. For more than 11 years, I've been teaching arts integration classes to graduate students at Lesley University in Cambridge, MA and I love it! My students are talented, inquisitive, and brilliant individuals who hunger for innovative ways to teach core curriculum concepts. As with anything else, learning new material can be intimidating, so scaffolding is really important as I introduce unfamiliar concepts. When we come near the final stages of class, I always ask them to say one word describing how they feel. These are the words that pop out most frequently in each class. The words "thankful" and 'renewed" are most frequently expressed. When I hear these kinds of expressions, I feel that must have offered something valuable both to the fields of teacher education and arts integration as teachers walk away not only having learned content and but also having felt the positive impact of the journey!
